Valentine’s Day is a great time to remind your family how much you love them, and also to remind them how much you love chocolate. But did you know that February marks another holiday that is also a great opportunity to show your family you care? This month is National Children’s Dental Month, a chance to teach children about the importance of dental care, and to brush up on your own dental knowledge as well. That way you can teach your kids the best ways to care for their smiles, setting them up to enjoy a lifetime of great oral health!
Resources to Help You Care for Your Kids’ Smiles
Most parents know they need to teach their kids about proper dental hygiene, but not all parents know when to start brushing their baby’s teeth, or how frequently their kids need dental appointments. Fortunately there is a host of wonderful resources available to help parents better understand their role in their children’s oral care.
- First, your pediatric dentist is a wonderful source of knowledge. From learning about the most common dental issues children face (cavities, for instance) to offering dental sealants designed to prevent problems, a children’s dentist is a great aid in maintaining your kids’ oral health.
- The ADA’s website is another great resource, one that includes directions about how frequently children need to visit the dentist.
- This month, The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research has also provided some wonderful printable illustrated booklets designed to address a variety of dental issues with your kids. Learning can be fun, and the more interested you can get your kids in their dental health, the more likely they are to maintain a great hygiene routine throughout life.
